I don’t let people get away with that crap — the “Oh, golly, I’ll take up a seat with my backpack or purse on this completely-filled bus so that no one can sit next to me” crap. If the bus is mostly EMPTY, sure, I put my backpack in a seat too. Once it’s getting full though, no way. And when I NEED a seat, I will totally stand next to the double-seat-hogger and say, “Please move your things so I can sit down.”

I’ve moved my butt before, but only if asked politely or if the guy is elderly or disabled, and I also will pay 2 fares if I want an extra spot to put my backpack down.

People do this because no one calls them on it! I’d bet nobody on your bus even asked that guy to move his bag. People will ride standing up, rather than *gasp* speak to a stranger! I always just walk up to the offending party and say in a loud cheerful voice, so others can hear: “HELLO THERE! WOULD YOU MIND MOVING YOUR BAG SO I CAN SIT DOWN, PLEASE?! THANKS SO MUCH!” I’ve never known it to fail, unless the person was actually too drunk or medicated to realize I was speaking to them. In that case I’d rather let them keep the seat.
