Half a transfer

I drive for Metro Transit and end up hearing a lot of stories from drivers back at the garage. One story in particular was funny-almost “creative” way of expressing a common frustration of many drivers. One evening on the 5 line a driver had a passenger get on and only put in half the fare-a common practice along with “no fare”. The man stated he only had half the fare and could he please have a transfer? The driver smiled and pulled up the transfer-grabbing it before the man could and ripped it in two peices. The man replied “What the f-*** is this?” The driver repiled “You payed half the fare..here’s half a transfer!”

I do it a little differently. I keep a stock of transfers with 1/2 hour of time left on them and another group with one hour. When somebody pays a short fare I give them one or the other, depending on how close they came to a full fare. The real cheats notice that I give them a transfer that doesn’t come from the fare box and check the time remaining. Funny how they then find the rest of the fare.

When I drive express routes downtown, I get all kinds of people who jump on and say they “forgot” to get a transfer. When the train started running, I’d pull up a “RAIL ONLY” transfer. ahnd it to them, and close the door and pull away! Can’t get on another bus w/ that type of transfer. Never have had the same person get on my bus and ask twice;)

What I hate about the “#5 crowd” is that you can have that sort of sense of humor and try to enforce the rules, but you’ll end up being beat up or stabbed or shot for it.
