It's all the rage to catch these days. See, how you get it is by shoving your head up your butt and caring about yourself. Thereby, it's "Me first, you second." This is why 10 year olds with cellphones and bicycles ride by people like me on the sidewalk and yell, "Outta my way, @sshole!" instead of, perhaps, getting off that bike or off the fricken sidewalk. My girlfriend got her tip jar stolen at a coffee shop during mid day. No one even yelled after the guy. A group near the door said they saw him take it but thought he was "going to the bank". It seems that the locals here are paralyzed by it and it adversely affects their abilities to take action in confrontational types of situations.
