Bad hair decade

In the late 80′s I was on a bus, in Milwaukee. Probably going home from my “McJob” at the downtown mall, late at night. A woman gets on the bus, no one I recalled seeing on that route, as it was usually full of other “McJobbers” from the same mall, most of them high school kids like I was. It was kinda cold out. She had on a knee length wool coat, over a sweater, w. a scarf, a woolen cap, and a head scarf over that. I was only wearing a hoodie over my grease stained “McUniform”, so I’m guessing it was in the high 30′s-low 40′s. Definitly not weather for what she had on. Ok, she’s probably homeless. I’ve seen many homeless folks on the buses.

As she settled in, she startrd peeling of the layers….She got to her head coverings. She finally got the woolen cap off, and out came the longest, most tangled, knotted up, foul smelling braid of hair I’ve ever seen! it had to be five feet long! It was salt and pepper, I think it had “tennants” too.

She “lopped” it over the back of the seat she was in. At that point, some of the other passengers moved away! I was sittiing in the back, trying to sleep, but after seeing all this, it was all I could do to not laugh out loud!

This reminds me of a story I read in a nursing book years ago.

A homeless woman was brought into the hospital complaining of several ailments, one of which was an intense itching on her scalp. As they were examining her, they took her wig off her head, and a bunch of cockroaches scattered out.

    Human rat nest

I was on the 34- Chicago to Aurora, when a large lady scrambled onto the bus. She was wearing at least 3 coats! She sat a few seats away from me.
The air conditioning didn`t work on the bus, so it was hot as hell in there. I don`t know how she could stand being in here with that many clothes.
I heard wierd sounds coming from her direction. I didn`t look though. I bet she was getting heat stroke, and I didn`t want to see someone regurgitate, right after I had eaten breakfast.
At the next stop; I heard rustling. I saw “Miss. Coats” get off.
I looked out the window, and saw the lady taking of her coats. A little rat jumped out from the inner coat`s pockets. Then “Miss. Coats” let her hair loose and another rat jumped out of her hair. She dug through her outer coat`s pocket and pulled out yet another rat.
The bus stop was nearly deserted, and, there was only 2 other people on my bus, and they were busy reading the news.
The bus moved on, so I don`t know what “Miss. Coats” did next, but I really don`t care.
    Talk about a wierd day!
