This transfer is no good
Long, long ago, before the buses had electronic fare boxes, drivers issued paper transfers and had to check them visually when they were presented. Also, long, long ago MTC, as it was called then, didn’t have its own police force. It hired off-duty police from various departments. They would often ride in plain-clothes, sitting at the rear of the bus to keep an eye on things.
Driver 419, Bob, was westbound on the 21 with a plainclothes police officer sitting in the back when a young man got on the bus and handed him his transfer. Bob looked at the transfer and saw that it was expired. He said, “Sir, this transfer is no good.” At that moment the police officer came from the back of the bus and pounced on the fellow with the invalid transfer and wrestled him to the floor. Bob thought to himself, concerning the transfer, it wasn’t that bad. But it turns out the bad transfer guy had an outstanding warrent and the officer recognized him.
