I’m listening honey

I was sitting in the front of the bus directly across from this older couple, easily in their 70’s. The man was wearing a worn out red baseball cap pretty low and it cast a shadow on his face. The woman was all dolled up with make up and in a talkative mood. I think she was speaking Chinese.

I had no idea what she was saying, but that didn’t stop me from speculating. I went through a few theories, from they’re on their way to see her son from a previous marriage’s new apartment, to she’s applying to renew her driver’s license. But after seeing just how excited she was, I finally decided that they were on their way into Minneapolis to go to the Guthrie for a play that she really wanted to see. Notice in all of these theories it’s something that the woman is excited about, not the man, for he didn’t say a word the entire time.

Anyway, after about 5 minutes of watching this woman babble on, I thought it was really strange that the guy hadn’t said anything. I looked closer and through the shadow of his cap I could see now that his eyes were closed. He was totally asleep!

The woman kept on babbling for another few minutes before she finally said something, paused, and when he didn’t respond she elbowed him in the side and started yelling! The guy mumbled in an non-apologetic tone and she started right back up again. I got off before I had a chance to see if he would fall asleep again.
