Hot-Ass Bus

A couple of years ago I had a job as an English as a Second Language teacher, for adults. Part of our curriculum was to teach the students how to ride the bus. Another teacher and I had about 15 students with us, all recently-arrived Hmong refugees from Thailand. It was hot that day- well over 90 degrees, and the bus was late.

When the 16 finally pulled up, it was packed. We managed to get all our students on the bus without incident, but there were some pretty surly people on that bus! Two young women kept yanking on the stop-cord, exclaiming, “Stop this bus! Let me off this hot-ass bus!” Our students were terrified. Every time I get together with that teacher, we laugh about “this hot-ass bus” and our terrified English students.
