On Valentines Day our bus driver gave out candy hearts to all the women on board. Then, about halfway through the trip, our driver said to the men on board that he would buy them lunch if they got up and put together a romantic sentence using the candy hearts. Nobody volunteered, but it was fun to watch the men squirm. Even they were laughing at the funny bus driver who started to read his own after nobody else volunteered.

Then the driver told all the men on board how happy the women were to just get a little candy, and that he expected them to go out and buy valentines for the women in their lives and watch them smile too.

i was on my way home from summer school in the summer of ‘07. i took the 64 as i usually did. while on payne ave. i noticed, while listening to my music, that three black men were talking to this white man. the white guy handed one of the black men a prescription drug bottle and the guy opened it. the man pulled out a joint of marijuana and said, “damn, this some good stuff.” the white guy then replied,”yea, thats some white rhino.” [warning: bad language] then the black guy was like no shit and put it in his pocket and said thanks. the white boy started telling the guy to give him his weed back and the black guy was saying that it was his weed now. that they had had no agreement to buying and selling the weed. apparently the white boy didn’t want to get beat up cause the black guy had two of his friends with so he didn’t argue with them.

then one of the guys said, “alright then, i’ll pay for it.” he pulls out a stack of twenty’s and lays them down on the seat. the white boy then starts to grab the money and then the black guy says, “don’t touch my mother fucking money,” and the white guy pulls back. then the black guy with money says if the white guy had change for a twenty and the white guy pulls out a ten and attemps to hand it to the black guy, but then one of his friends, the one that had taken the weed, takes the ten out of his hand and says thanks again. the three guys start laughing and then the white guy just says to give him his stuff back over and over.

two stop later, the black guys get off and the white guy just sits there. another black guys says to him, “you gonna let them punk you like that,” and starts laughing. then the black guy asks him how old he was and it turns out that he was only fourteen.

I was taking the 64 home from downtown St Paul a few years ago. It was a cool, but beautiful, spring day. The sun was shining, but it was still cool enough to require a jacket. I had transferred from the 94 at Cedar, and a few blocks later a gentleman boarded the bus, clearly intoxicated, and carrying a cardboard box. He paid his fare and made his unsteady way up the aisle, taking the first forward-facing seat. I was keeping an eye on him, wondering if he would start in on crazy-drunk-guy-on-a-bus antics. He sat quietly for a few blocks, so I went back to my book.

A few blocks later I noticed that he was fumbling around and opening a window. Since it was really too cold to have the window open, I knew he was going to puke. He leaned over toward the window to cool off. Crisis averted? Temporarily. After a bit, he closed the window and sat up straight. Then the gagging began. Followed by the retching. The folks sitting near him recoiled in horror. But as I mentioned before, he was a perfect gentleman. All of the barf went right into his cardboard box. And when he was done, he sat quietly with the box on his lap. He was still sitting there when I got off. Through the back door, natch.

I was on the bus the other night when two thirteen years old got on and was sharing a transfer. The bus driver told them only one transfer per person. When they got seated one of them pulled out a cigarette and starting smoking. The bus driver pulled over and told them to get out. Thanks to the bus driver.

I don’t smoke and I do not appreciate someone thinking that they have a right to infringe on others rights. And you were underage. My suggestion to these two boys is to start growing up. Some day when you are older and have breathing problems, and someone lights one up on the bus, stop and think that you did the same.
